Rug Care Guide
A handmade wool rug will last for generations with a little care. Wool is naturally resilient and stain-resistant thanks to its lanolin, so most of the work is simply gentle, regular attention.
Everyday care
- Vacuum once a week on low suction, without the rotating brush, following the direction of the pile.
- Rotate the rug 180° every six months so it wears and fades evenly.
- Use a rug pad on hard floors to stop slipping and reduce wear on the foundation.
- Shedding is normal for new wool rugs and stops after a few months.
Spills and stains
- Blot immediately with a clean white cloth. Never rub.
- Dab with cold water and a drop of wool detergent, working from the outside of the stain inwards.
- Blot dry and let the rug air dry flat, away from direct sunlight.
Kilims and margoums
Flat weaves are reversible: flip them twice a year. Do not soak the embroidered relief of a margoum. Store rolled around a tube, never folded.
Deep cleaning
Every 3 to 5 years have the rug professionally washed by a specialist in wool rugs. Never machine wash or dry clean a hand-knotted carpet. If you are near Kairouan, we offer washing and repair in our workshop.
